Club Connect: Meet the... Stockton Fishing and Conservation Club

The Stockton Fishing and Conservation Club is just one way to get involved at Stockton University.

Galloway, N.J. 鈥 The water may be frozen, but the semester with the is going full sail.

Kickstarting the organization back up after the pandemic, club president Seth Sims has big plans for the club. The Fishing and Conservation Club hopes to give students the opportunity to try a new hobby and create a safe space to learn what may otherwise seem like an intimidating activity.

The group is currently working on an art workshop, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, featuring a Japanese art form, 鈥済yotaku,鈥 characterized by covering a clean fish in a nontoxic ink, which is then used to create a print. This allows you to preserve the fish without wasting the meat.

For more information on upcoming events and contests, join the club on and follow them on Instagram (@StocktonFishing).

鈥淔ishing can be very daunting, it鈥檚 extremely male-dominated,鈥 Sims said. 鈥淚t can be kind of aggressive鈥 lot of people who might be interested in it don鈥檛 really get the hand that they need, or someone they feel safe going with, and we really want to be that.鈥

Sims is looking forward to welcoming new members from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences.

A typical meeting with the club consists of a presentation on how to catch a certain kind of fish, depending on what time of year. They also brief their members on tools and methods that can be used to catch these fish.

Over the next two weeks, they will run a contest amongst their members to see who can catch the largest fish of the kind they reviewed using those methods. The winner receives a gift card. They also host a semester-long contest to see who can catch the largest fish overall.
