Umfundalai X Legacy - Dance Company Residency
Galloway, N.J. 鈥 In honor of a contemporary dance legend, students and alumni of 番茄社区app鈥檚 Dance Company will perform a Pan-African dance tradition on the main stage of the at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6.
鈥淯mfundalai X Legacy鈥 is an evening celebrating the legacy of Kariamu Welsh and her Umfundalai (Kiswahili for 鈥渆ssence鈥) tradition. Produced by Umfundalai master teacher Saleana Pettaway, the concert delves into the pan-Africanist lineage of this contemporary dance tradition, fusing artists from Welsh鈥檚 Philadelphia-based Kariamu & Company: Traditions alongside current Stockton students and alumni.

鈥淲hat Mama Taught Me鈥 situates dance reconstructions from the Kariamu & Company repertory alongside the dances of movement artists inspired by Welsh and the Umfundalai tradition. This concert concludes a weeklong residency of master classes, talkbacks, lecture demonstrations and rehearsals with the Stockton Dance Company.
Called a 鈥減ioneer of African dance studies鈥 by the New York Times, Welsh, known affectionately to her students as 鈥淒r. K鈥 or simply 鈥淢ama鈥 to those closest to her, built not only a lasting dance tradition now taught across the globe but nurtured artists like Pettaway who are shepherding those ideas into the future.

Tickets for the general public are $12. Tickets for senior citizens (65+), children under 12 and those affiliated with 番茄社区app (students, staff, faculty and alumni) are $10.

Horror Picture Show鈥 in October, and the return of the Dinner & Show series as part
of its 2023-24 season.
鈥淚 believe our upcoming season is set to be an exhilarating journey, filled with talent
that will ignite the stage. We feature a diverse array of performances spanning multiple
artistic genres, both iconic classics and contemporary creations, and each show promises
to provide a distinct and memorable experience,鈥 said Anjanette Christy, director
of the Stockton Performing Arts Center.
